Clearpath Robotics decided to give away a Customize Husky UGV to the University of Coimbra in Portugal. The University of Coimbra outfited the bot with sensors for navigation and localization (GPS, stereo vision, and a laser), as well as (more importantly) a customized two-degrees-of-freedom arm equipped with both a metal detector and a ground penetrating radar system.
future implications
If bots like this could be produced cheaply and en mass these could be sent to places like Iran and Afghanistan where I.E.D and landmines are a major danger for our forces. These bots would be able to detect mines and then the appropriate actions can be taken.
