The article
Initially Lockheed Martin's Transformer TX, was a DARPA project that would've resulted in an unmanned payload transport system that can deliver just about anything. Even a car, with you in it. At some point someone in Lockheed Martin has the bright idea to separate the payload and transport system completely and turn it into an autonomous payload delivery system. With the idea that you could then through anything vaguely payload-shaped under it and send the package on its way Lockheed Martin came out with the concept model in the picture you see to the left.
The implications
There are several major potential applications that this technology could be used for. Generally they would be leaning towards military use more than anything else. There could be pod developed for use with this autonomous delivery system to bring fresh troops to areas in need of troops. This tech could also be used for jobs of less importance and complexity such as supply delivery and other similar jobs. However, this delievery system could also be used in place of human pilots in missions that would be too difficult or dangerous otherwise.
